Heads Up — Lamp Care Basics
  • This lamp runs on a 1000W MH ballast — not an HPS ballast. Confirm your ballast type before installing.
  • Wattage must match exactly. A 1000W lamp needs a 1000W ballast — never run on lower or higher wattage settings.
  • Always operate in an enclosed luminaire that complies with UL 1598. Never run an MH lamp in an open fixture.
  • For 24/7 lighting cycles, turn the lamp off once a week for at least 15 minutes — reduces rupture risk on continuous-duty MH lamps.
  • Always handle with clean gloves or a soft cloth. Skin oils on the quartz cause hot spots and shorten lamp life.
  • Never restart a hot lamp. Wait at least 10 minutes after power-off before re-igniting.

How To Use

1
Confirm your ballast is a 1000W MH unit (electronic or magnetic both work). If it's a 1000W HPS ballast, this lamp won't work — you'll need a conversion bulb instead.
2
Make sure you're using an enclosed reflector that complies with UL 1598 — never run an MH lamp in an open fixture.
3
Power down everything and let any previous lamp cool fully. Use clean gloves or a cloth when handling the new bulb.
4
Screw the lamp into your reflector socket — finger-tight only, no force needed.
5
Power up — full brightness takes a few minutes to settle in. The lamp may appear dim during warm-up. That's normal for a discharge lamp.
6
Set hang height for veg — typically 50–80cm above the canopy for 1000W. Watch your plants and adjust as they grow into the light.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this work on an HPS ballast?

No. This is a standard Metal Halide lamp that requires a 1000W MH ballast. If you're running an HPS ballast and want a blue-spectrum veg lamp, you'll need a conversion bulb (sold separately) — not this standard MH variant.

Can I use this for flowering as well as veg?

No. The 7200K spectrum is heavily blue-shifted and tuned for vegetative growth. For flowering, you'll want an HPS lamp or a flowering-specific MH like the SolarMax Gold (3000K). Most growers run MH for veg, then switch to HPS for the flower flip.

Why is MH better than HPS for veg?

Plants in early growth stages respond strongest to blue light in the 380–520nm range. MH lamps emit a heavy blue-violet spectrum that drives compact growth, tight internodes, and strong root systems. HPS skews red-orange and is better suited to flowering — using it for veg often produces stretchy, leggy plants.

What size space does a 1000W MH cover for veg?

A 1000W MH covers a generous veg footprint — typically 1.8m x 1.8m comfortably, or larger if you're running supplemental light. Hang at 50–80cm above the canopy and adjust as plants grow. Smaller spaces will need a higher mounting position to avoid heat stress.

How long does this lamp last?

Rated 15,000 hours of operation. Most growers replace 1000W MH lamps after 12 to 18 months of regular use. Watch your plants — stretchy growth or pale leaves can be a sign the spectrum is shifting and the lamp is fading.

Does it come with a warranty?

Yes. SolarMax backs every lamp with a full one-year manufacturer warranty against defects. Keep your packaging and proof of purchase in case you need to make a claim.

Do you ship Australia-wide?

Yes — we ship across Australia from our Tasmanian base. Free shipping kicks in over $499*. HID lamps are packed carefully to handle transit, but if anything arrives damaged, give us a yell and we'll sort it.
