Pairs well with
Still water in a reservoir goes stale fast. An air stone breaks the air from your pump into fine bubbles that keep the water moving and carry oxygen through it, and this one from Aqua One does the job with a 50mm ceramic ball. Push it onto the airline from your air pump, drop it into a nutrient reservoir, DWC bucket or aquarium, and let it bubble away. It's a simple, cheap part with two things to know: it needs an air pump to run, and like every air stone it slowly clogs with mineral and nutrient build-up, so plan to clean it or keep a spare.

Grower's Tip
- Fit a check valve in the airline outside the reservoir, so water can't siphon back down the line into the pump if the power drops.
- Sit the pump above the water line where you can, for the same reason.
- When the bubbles turn coarse or patchy, the stone is clogging. Clean it or swap in a spare.
- Rinse the stone whenever you clean the reservoir between crops.
- Bigger tanks need more air. Run more than one stone from a pump with enough outlets.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the air stone need an air pump?
Yes. It has no motor of its own. It breaks up the air your pump pushes down the airline.
Can I use an aquarium air stone in a hydroponic reservoir?
Yes. It's sold for aquariums, and it does the same job in a nutrient reservoir or DWC bucket.
What size is it?
50mm across: a ceramic ball on a short spigot that the airline pushes onto.
What size airline does it take?
4mm. The spigot takes standard 4mm airline or flexi tubing.
Does it come with airline or a pump?
No. You get the air stone only. The pump, airline and check valve are sold separately.
Do air stones wear out?
Yes, in the sense that they clog. Minerals and nutrient residue slowly block the pores and the bubbles get coarser, so clean it or replace it.
Do I need a check valve?
Yes, we'd fit one. A check valve stops water running back down the airline into your pump if the power goes off.
