How to Repot With Gardeners Friend

1
Water the plant thoroughly before repotting and prepare a clean pot 5 cm wider than the original, with several large drainage holes.
2
Gently remove the plant from its old pot, keeping the root ball intact. Prune any damaged or dead roots.
3
Partly fill the new pot with Gardeners Friend Premium Potting Mix.
4
Position the plant in the centre of the pot so the old soil surface sits 3–4 cm below the top edge.
5
Fill the remaining space to 2 cm from the top of the pot and firm down gently around the root ball.
6
Water thoroughly, allow excess to drain, and place in shade for 2–3 days while the plant establishes. After that, water only when the surface is dry — using lukewarm water for best results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gardeners Friend Premium Potting Mix made in Australia?

Yes — it's manufactured by Waratah Launceston Pty Ltd in Launceston, Tasmania, using a rich organic base, peat moss, and Tasmanian quality assurance. The Grow Guys is based in Invermay, just down the road from the manufacturer.

How long does the slow-release fertiliser last?

Up to 9 months. The blend includes a controlled-release feed that supplies steady nutrients across a full growing season, plus trace elements for ongoing plant vitality. Top-up feeding isn't usually needed in the first few months.

Can I use this potting mix for both indoor and outdoor plants?

Yes. The mix is formulated for both — indoor pots, hanging baskets, window boxes, repotting ornamentals, planting bulbs, and outdoor potting of roses, hedges, herbs, and shrubs. The wetting agent makes it especially well-suited to hanging baskets and pots in sun.

Does this mix contain a wetting agent?

Yes. A wetting agent is included so water is absorbed evenly rather than running off the surface when the mix has dried out. This is the difference between a basket that rehydrates properly after a hot day and one where the water just channels through to the drip tray.

Is this potting mix suitable for hydroponic systems?

No. This is a soil-based premium potting mix designed for traditional pots, baskets, and garden beds. For hydroponic and soilless growing, choose a substrate like coco coir or expanded clay from our Substrates range.

How should I store an opened bag?

Roll the top of the bag down and store in a dry, sheltered area. This keeps the mix from drying out, protects the slow-release fertiliser, and prevents weather degradation. Avoid leaving the bag open and exposed to rain or direct sun.
