What Is Fulvic Acid?
Fulvic acid is a naturally occurring substance extracted from ancient peat and coal deposits. Rather than being a single compound, it's a blend of various acidic organic molecules formed from the breakdown of plant matter that existed millions of years ago. In hydroponics, fulvic acid is typically supplied as a highly concentrated liquid and must be diluted before use.
What Does It Do?
The primary benefit of adding fulvic acid to your nutrient solution is that it enhances the plant’s ability to absorb minerals. This boost in nutrient uptake supports faster cell growth and overall plant development. Fulvic acid also helps transport nutrients more efficiently within the plant by increasing cell membrane permeability and stimulating cell division.
How Does It Work?
Fulvic acid acts as a chelating agent, binding loosely to minerals and making them more bioavailable to the plant. This chelation improves absorption through the roots and also enhances the internal transport of these nutrients, contributing to healthier, faster-growing plants.
How to Use Fulvic Acid
Because it's highly concentrated, fulvic acid must be diluted in your nutrient solution. It should be added each time a new batch of nutrients is mixed.
Recommended Dosage
Fulvic acid is most effective at concentrations between 50 ppm and 125 ppm in your nutrient tank. Here's a quick guide:
-
2 ml per litre = 50 ppm
-
3 ml per litre = 75 ppm
-
4 ml per litre = 100 ppm
-
5 ml per litre = 125 ppm
Use higher concentrations for heavy-feeding plants and lower rates for lighter feeders.
How Often Should You Add It?
-
Recirculating Systems: Add fulvic acid weekly.
-
Run-to-Waste Systems: Add only when preparing a new batch of nutrients.
Safety Tips
Fulvic acid is not hazardous, but as with all nutrient additives, it’s best to handle it with care and follow standard safety practices.
What to Expect
By improving nutrient availability and transport, fulvic acid can enhance plant health, increase yields, and accelerate growth—making it a valuable addition to your hydroponic setup.
