Feed a grevillea with a general-purpose fertiliser and you can kill it with kindness: many Australian natives, the Proteaceae in particular (proteas, grevilleas, banksias, waratahs, hakeas), evolved on phosphorus-poor soils and cannot cope with the phosphorus levels in ordinary plant food. Native Focus is Growth Technology's answer, a complete liquid nutrient made in Australia with phosphorus held at 0.2% w/v, nitrogen supplied as nitrate, calcium and magnesium in balance, and all six trace elements chelated. No urea, chlorides or sodium, pH buffered for tap water, and it works in pots, garden beds and hydroponics at 3–7ml per litre. Available in 250ml, 1L, 5L and 20L.

Low phosphorus by design. Native Focus carries 0.2% phosphorus, less than half of what is in Complete Focus. That is the point: it is for natives that are sensitive to phosphorus. For everything else in the garden, Complete Focus is the better all-rounder.
Phosphorus held at 0.2%Growth Technology sets the phosphorus low to avoid toxicity in phosphorus-sensitive Australian natives. Most general fertilisers run two to five times that figure.
Still a complete feedLow phosphorus does not mean low everything. Nitrate-nitrogen 2.7%, potassium 3.0%, calcium 1.6%, magnesium 0.68% and six chelated trace elements, so natives in pots get the full set.
Pots, beds and hydroFormulated for both soil and hydroponics. Potted natives on a balcony, a native garden bed or a kangaroo paw in semi-hydro all run off the same bottle.
No urea, chlorides or sodiumNothing in it that natives dislike and nothing that builds up in a pot. Nitrogen arrives as nitrate, ready for the roots to take.
pH buffered for tap waterMix at the label rate and the solution sits in range with most Australian tap water. No pH pen required.
Feed at every wateringLittle and often suits natives better than a heavy seasonal dose. Use it at 3–5ml per litre in potting mix and flush monthly.

Grower's Tip

  • Start at 3ml per litre on potted natives and move up to 5ml once the plant is established and growing. Growth Technology's advice across the range is to increase strength gradually as the plant matures.
  • Use it on the whole native bed, not just the Proteaceae. Natives that tolerate phosphorus will not miss it, and you avoid the risk of a general feed drifting onto the ones that cannot.
  • Water to runoff and flush with plain water once a month. Native roots are shallow and fine, and they resent a salty pot more than most.
  • Do not add a separate phosphorus or bloom booster to a native. Native Focus already carries the balance Growth Technology set; a booster undoes the point of buying it.
  • Mix fresh at least every fortnight. A pre-mixed solution keeps for about 1–2 weeks.
  • Store cool and dark, shake before use.

How To Use It

1Shake the bottle. Measure 5–7ml per litre of water for hydro and semi-hydro, or 3–5ml per litre for soil and potting mix. Start at the low end and work up as the plant matures.
2Add the concentrate to the water and mix. Tap water is fine for most households and no pH adjustment is needed.
3Water until it runs from the drainage holes, or refill the semi-hydro reservoir to its usual level.
4Repeat at every watering. Little and often beats a big monthly dose.
5In garden beds, water the mixed solution around the drip line rather than at the trunk. Native feeder roots sit out wide and shallow.
6Once a month, water with plain water only to flush mineral salts from the pot. Mix fresh solution at least every fortnight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Native Focus safe for grevilleas, banksias and proteas?

Yes. It is formulated with low phosphorus (0.2% w/v) to avoid toxicity in phosphorus-sensitive Australian natives, which is exactly the group grevilleas, banksias, proteas, waratahs and hakeas belong to.

Can I use it on non-native plants?

Yes, but there are better choices. Non-natives will grow on it, but most want more phosphorus than Native Focus carries. Complete Focus suits everything that is not phosphorus-sensitive.

Does it contain urea?

No. Native Focus is free from urea, chlorides and sodium. Nitrogen is supplied as nitrate.

How much do I use?

3–5ml per litre of water in soil and potting mix, 5–7ml per litre in hydro and semi-hydro, at every watering. Flush with plain water once a month.

Do I need to adjust the pH?

No, not with most tap water. It is pH buffered.

Can I use it in garden beds, not just pots?

Yes. It is formulated for soil as well as hydroponics. Water the mixed solution around the drip line at the soil rate.

What is the NPK?

Growth Technology publishes a full analysis rather than a ratio: nitrate-nitrogen 2.7%, phosphorus 0.2% and potassium 3.0% w/v, plus calcium, magnesium, sulfur and six chelated trace elements. The full table is in Specifications.

Does it smell?

No. Like the rest of the Focus range it is completely odourless.

How long does a mixed solution last?

About 1–2 weeks. After that, replace it. Old mixed nutrient can harbour bacteria or fungi.

Welcome to The Grow Guys

We built The Grow Guys from the soil up — well, coco and perlite. Before we sold gear, we bought it, ran it, and learned the hard way what's worth the money and what ends up in the shed. That's the filter everything on our shelves passes through. No sales scripts, no rebadged junk, no telling you what you want to hear. Just gear we'd run ourselves and advice from people who actually grow. Chasing higher yields, tighter flowers, or your first harvest? You're in the right place.
