Bluelab pH Probe KCl Storage Solution is what keeps a pH probe alive. Every Bluelab pH pen and probe stores wet — the glass tip sits in KCl solution between uses, and a probe left dry drifts, slows down and eventually dies for good. This is Bluelab's own laboratory-grade solution, made specifically for their pH pens and probes, to keep response fast and readings accurate for the life of the instrument. Available as a single-use sachet or in 120ml and 250ml bottles.

Extends Probe LifepH probes are consumable glass instruments — stored dry, their life and performance drop hard. KCl storage is the single biggest thing you can do to make one last.
Faster, Truer ReadingsA properly hydrated probe responds quickly and settles on a stable number instead of drifting around it.

Grow Guys Tip — Never Substitute Plain Water
  • Never store or soak a pH probe in RO, distilled or deionised water. Pure water changes the chemistry in the probe's reference and kills it — this is the number one way growers destroy pH probes, and it's exactly what KCl solution exists to prevent.
  • Keep a bottle next to your meter. The moment a probe comes out of the reservoir, rinse it in fresh tap water and put it back in a KCl-filled storage cap.
  • If a probe has been left dry, don't bin it yet — clean it, soak the tip in KCl solution for at least 24 hours, then recalibrate. If calibration holds, it survived.

How to Use It

1Everyday storage: keep enough KCl solution in the probe's storage cap to cover the tip. For pens, add 3–5 drops into the wetting seal inside the cap each week.
2Monthly hydration: stand the pen or probe upright in a small container with enough KCl solution to submerge the tip, per the instructions on the label.
3First use or dried-out probe: soak the tip in KCl solution for at least 24 hours, rinse in fresh water, then calibrate before trusting a reading.
4Always follow the manual for your specific Bluelab pen or probe — storage details differ slightly between models, and the product manual is the final word.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I store my pH probe in tap, RO or distilled water instead?

No. RO, distilled and deionised water change the chemistry in the probe's reference and permanently damage it — Bluelab is explicit on this. Tap water rinses are fine, but storage must be in KCl solution.

Which Bluelab products does it work with?

Bluelab specifies it for the pH Pen, Soil pH Pen, pH Probes and Soil pH Probes — any Bluelab pH instrument with a glass probe tip that stores wet.

How often should I hydrate my probe?

Bluelab recommends storing in KCl after every use and hydrating monthly, with a full 24-hour soak before first use or whenever a probe has been allowed to dry out. Pens also take 3–5 drops into the storage cap's wetting seal weekly.

Should I buy the sachet or a bottle?

The sachet covers a one-off hydration soak or a care-kit top-up. If you own a pH pen or probe, a bottle is the practical choice — storage is an every-use habit, and the 250ml works out far cheaper per ml for probes living in KCl year-round.

My probe dried out — is it dead?

Not necessarily. Clean the tip, soak it in KCl solution for at least 24 hours, then run a full 2-point calibration. If calibration succeeds and holds, the probe survived; if it won't calibrate or reads the same in every buffer, it's permanently damaged and needs replacing.
