How to Repot With Gardeners Friend

1
Water the plant thoroughly before repotting and prepare a clean pot 5 cm wider than the original, with several large drainage holes.
2
Gently remove the plant from its old pot, keeping the root ball intact. Prune any damaged or dead roots.
3
Partly fill the new pot with Gardeners Friend Potting Mix.
4
Position the plant in the centre of the pot so the old soil surface sits 3–4 cm below the top edge.
5
Fill the remaining space to 2 cm from the top of the pot and firm down gently around the root ball.
6
Water thoroughly, allow excess to drain, and place in shade for 2–3 days while the plant establishes. Fertilise immediately after potting and repeat as required through the growing season. Water only when the surface is dry — using lukewarm water for best results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gardeners Friend Potting Mix made in Australia?

Yes — it's manufactured by Waratah Launceston Pty Ltd in Launceston, Tasmania, using a rich organic base and peat moss. The Grow Guys is based in Invermay, just down the road from the manufacturer.

Is this potting mix suitable for seedlings?

Yes — the manufacturer specifically rates this blend as ideal for all types of seedlings. The light texture and peat moss content give young roots room to develop without compaction.

What's the difference between this 25L and the Premium 30L?

This 25L is the everyday standard blend — rich organic base, peat moss, seedling-friendly. The Premium 30L adds a 9-month slow-release fertiliser, a wetting agent, and trace elements, making it the set-and-forget choice for established plants and pots in full sun. Use this 25L when you'll be feeding the plant yourself, and the Premium 30L when you want the bag to do the feeding for you.

Can I use it on native plants?

Yes — the manufacturer rates this mix for annuals, perennials, and native plants. If you're potting phosphorus-sensitive natives like Grevillea, Banksia, or other Proteaceae, just watch your fertiliser choice over time and pick a low-phosphorus native feed.

Is this potting mix suitable for hydroponic systems?

No. This is a soil-based potting mix for traditional pots, baskets, and garden beds. For soilless and hydroponic growing, look at our Substrates range for coco coir, expanded clay, and other inert media.

How should I store an opened bag?

Seal the top of the bag closed and store in a dry, sheltered area. This prevents the mix from drying out and protects it from weather. Avoid leaving an opened bag in direct sun or rain.
