Why do I need calibration weights?
Scales drift. Load cells age, knocks shift the calibration, temperature changes affect the reading, and storage conditions matter. A calibration weight lets you bring the scale back to factory accuracy in 30 seconds. Without one, you can't verify whether your scale is reading correctly — and a scale you can't trust is worse than no scale at all.
Which On Balance scales is this set compatible with?
All of them. The five weights cover the calibration prompt values for the Mini MZ, Envy NV-500, SBS-200, 710-Pro, and Tuff Weigh series. The 100 g weight handles the 100 g and 200 g scales; the 50 g and lower handle the higher-resolution prompts. Most other consumer precision scales (Truweigh, Kenex, Infyniti, etc.) work with the same weight values.
Are these OIML or NIST traceable?
No. These are working calibration weights for consumer precision scales — accurate enough to recalibrate scales reading 0.01 g, but not certified to laboratory metrology standards. For NIST or OIML traceable weights you'd need to go through a metrology supplier; expect to pay 5–10x the price for the same physical weights with a calibration certificate attached.
How accurate are the weights?
Manufactured to consumer-precision tolerance. The weights are accurate enough to recalibrate scales reading 0.01 g resolution — that's the use case they're designed for. They're not lab-grade reference standards, but they're well-matched to the scales they go with.
Can I use them with non-On Balance scales?
Yes. Most consumer precision scales prompt for the same calibration weight values (commonly 50 g, 100 g, or 200 g). As long as your scale prompts for one of the values in this set, it'll work. Check your scale's manual for the specific calibration weight value it expects.
How often should I recalibrate?
Depends on use. For occasional weighing, once every few months is plenty. For daily precision work, recalibrate at the start of any session where accuracy matters. After moving the scale, dropping it, or storing it for a long stretch, always recalibrate before relying on the readings.
