A raised bed takes the hard work out of a veggie patch: no digging, no fighting clay or couch grass, and soil you control from day one. This Rectangle raised garden bed is 1700 x 800 x 400mm of Tasmanian made corrugated steel with a rolled safety top edge, in bare zinc ($190) or colour steel in Monument, Pale Eucalypt or Heritage Red ($215). It sits on any flat ground, so it suits renters, new gardens and no-dig or living soil beds. The honest bit: at 400mm high you still bend to work it, so if your back is the problem, look at our 800mm tall beds. We deliver within Tasmania only.

In store or ordered in. Some sizes and colours are out the front of our Invermay store now, ready to take home. Anything we don't have is ordered in, 3 to 4 weeks. Pick up from Invermay, or choose Tasmanian delivery and we'll call you to quote it after you order.
Rolled safety top edgeThe top edge is rolled, not a raw cut lip, so no sliced forearms reaching across the bed and nothing sharp at kid height.
Made in TasmaniaMade down the road, not sent across Bass Strait in a courier van, so it turns up straight instead of dented.
No digging neededSits on lawn, gravel or pavers. Renters can pack it up and take it with them when they move.
Your soil from day oneFill it with a proper living soil and compost blend instead of whatever is under the lawn. Made for no-dig beds.
Zinc or colour steelBare zinc for the classic look and the lower price, or colour steel in Monument, Pale Eucalypt or Heritage Red to match the house.
A size for the spaceSix sizes from an 800mm square to a 2.2m long bed, in 400mm and 800mm heights, so it fits the spot you have.

Grower's Tip

  • Put the bed in its final spot before you fill it. Once it is full of soil, it is not moving.
  • Going on lawn? Lay overlapping cardboard across the base first to smother the grass. Skip plastic weed mat: it stops worms and drainage moving between the bed and the ground.
  • Check it is level end to end before filling. A lean shows up the moment soil goes in and water runs to one end.
  • Fill with a blend, not one bag type. Quality soil, compost and some worm castings hold structure and life far better than straight potting mix, which slumps.
  • Leave room at the top. New beds settle over the first months, and you will want space to top up with compost each season.
  • Lay drip line before you plant. It is a five-minute job in an empty bed and a fiddly one in a full one.

How To Set It Up

1Pick a flat spot in full sun, within reach of a tap or drip line.
2Mow or clear the ground low. On lawn, lay overlapping cardboard over the whole footprint.
3Set the bed in place and check it is level end to end and side to side. Pack under any low corner before filling.
4Fill with your soil and compost blend, watering every layer so it settles.
5Plant, mulch the surface and run your drip line. Top up with compost each season as it settles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to dig before setting it up?

No. It sits on any flat ground. On lawn, lay cardboard under it to smother the grass, then fill and plant.

Is the top edge sharp?

No. The top edge is rolled, so there is no raw cut lip to catch hands or arms.

What is the difference between zinc and colour?

Price and looks. Zinc is the bare steel finish at $190. Colour steel in Monument, Pale Eucalypt or Heritage Red is $215.

Can I put it on concrete or pavers?

Yes, as long as the surface is flat. Water drains out at the base, so expect some runoff and soil staining on hard surfaces.

How long does it take if you don't have it in stock?

About 3 to 4 weeks. We order your size and colour in and let you know when it lands.

Do you deliver?

Yes, within Tasmania. Choose Tasmanian delivery at checkout and we call you to quote it after you order, or pick up from our Invermay store. We don't ship garden beds to the mainland.

What should I fill it with?

A blend of quality soil and compost, with worm castings mixed into the top layer. Avoid straight bagged potting mix, which slumps over time.

Growers First, Retailers Second

Welcome to The Grow Guys

We built The Grow Guys from the soil up — well, coco and perlite. Before we sold gear, we bought it, ran it, and learned the hard way what's worth the money and what ends up in the shed. That's the filter everything on our shelves passes through. No sales scripts, no rebadged junk, no telling you what you want to hear. Just gear we'd run ourselves and advice from people who actually grow. Chasing higher yields, tighter flowers, or your first harvest? You're in the right place.
