The Saboten PT-21 is the curved-blade version of the same Japanese auto-opening scissor body as the PT-15 (straight) and PT-16 (angled) — same stainless steel, same fluorine coating, same magnetic open. The 35mm curved tip is shaped to follow the natural arc of stems and tuck around foliage, making it the pick for shaped pruning, bonsai work, and detail cuts in awkward angles. Scale markings etched at 3 to 13cm, removable magnets you can swap to tune the open weight, and an integrated locking clip. Made in Miki City, Japan.

Curved 35mm Tip Follows the arc of stems and curves around foliage — built for shaped pruning and bonsai work.
Magnetic Auto-Open 3mm magnetic inserts push the blades open between cuts — no spring, less wrist fatigue.
Fluorine Coating Sap and resin slide off — less gumming, faster cleanup, longer stretches between wipes.
Built-In Scale Markings etched on blade and handle at 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 13cm for measure-as-you-cut work.
Lock & Stow Integrated locking clip keeps the blades closed and protected between sessions.
Made in Japan Hand-finished in Miki City by Saboten — over 90 years of Japanese blade craft per pair.

Care & Tuning Tips
  • Wipe blades after each session — fluorine coating sheds resin best when it doesn't dry on.
  • Magnets are optional. Pull them out for traditional scissor feel, or swap to lighter or stronger sizes for a custom open.
  • Hone with a Saboten Tungsten Carbide Sharpener — light passes only. The steel is hard.
  • Clip the safety lock before pocketing or boxing to protect the curved tip — it's the most exposed part of the blade.
  • Keep them dry between uses. Stainless steel resists rust but isn't immune to standing moisture.

How to Use

1
Release the locking clip and check the magnetic action. If the open feels too light or too firm, swap the 3mm inserts for 2mm or 4mm tuning magnets to suit your hand.
2
Hold with a natural relaxed grip — fingers in the lower loop, thumb in the upper. The bonsai-style handle is shaped for repetitive motion, so don't death-grip it.
3
Use the curved tip to follow the arc of a stem — the curve lets you tuck the blade around foliage and approach the cut from the side instead of straight on. Perfect for shaped pruning, bonsai detail, and harvesting around tight clusters.
4
Use the etched scale markings to measure stem length on the fly — handy for taking propagation cuts to a specific size or pruning to a node.
5
Apply gentle, controlled pressure — the blade does the work. Forcing thick or woody material will roll the edge. Use proper secateurs for anything over pencil thickness.
6
Wipe the blades clean, dry thoroughly, engage the locking clip, and store in a dry spot. Periodically run a Saboten sharpener for a few light passes to keep the edge true.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the PT-15, PT-16 and PT-21?

All three share the same Japanese auto-opening scissor body — same stainless steel, same fluorine coating, same 3mm removable magnets, same locking clip, same 160mm length. The blade is the only difference. PT-15 is straight (flat detail cuts and fine stem work). PT-16 is angled (a bent tip for reaching behind dense growth). PT-21 is curved (a curved tip for following the arc of stems and shaped pruning).

Are the magnets removable?

Yes. The 3mm magnetic inserts pull out cleanly. You can run them as conventional non-spring scissors, or swap to 2mm or 4mm tuning magnets (sold separately) for a lighter or stronger automatic open depending on your hand and trim style.

Can I cut thick branches with these?

No. The PT-21 is built for soft stems, fine pruning, detail work, and harvest trimming. Anything pencil-thick or woody will roll the edge. For thicker material use a bypass secateur — the Saboten No. 1255 or No. 1257 are the in-house pairings.

Will the blades rust?

No, not under normal use. The blades are heat-treated Japanese stainless steel with a fluorine top coat — both rust resistant. They are not, however, immune to neglect. Wipe them dry after each session and store somewhere with low humidity, and the steel will outlast just about anything else on the bench.

Can I sharpen them at home?

Yes — but use the right tool. Saboten's Tungsten Carbide Sharpener is sized to suit the Saboten blade angle. Light passes only. The steel is hard, and an aggressive grind will remove the factory edge geometry. A few seconds of honing every few sessions is all most growers need.

Are these made in Japan?

Yes. Saboten has been producing blades in Miki City, Japan since 1932 — three generations of the Ishida family running the same workshop. The PT-21 is hand-finished there and shipped to us through Saboten's Australian distributor.
