Pairs well with
Tropicoir Husk Chip S is 100% coconut husk cut into chunky 12-16mm chips and pressed into a 4.5kg wrapped bale that opens up to roughly 55 litres. It is the coarse, airy end of the coir range, built for orchids, epiphytes and any plant whose roots want to breathe between waterings. Think of it as bark that rewets easily and hangs on to a little more moisture, without packing down in the pot.
Specifications
- Coir can carry residual salts, so soak the expanded chip, drain it, and rinse until the runoff EC sits low before it goes near roots.
- It is not sold as buffered. A soak in a mild Cal-Mag solution before potting stops the chip pulling calcium and magnesium away from your plants early on.
- Want a finer, wetter mix for seedlings or small pots? This is the wrong chip. Go finer, or look at a bark grade sized for the pot.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does one bale make?
Roughly 55 litres of loose chip once soaked and broken up, from a 4.5kg compressed bale.
Do I need to rinse it before use?
Yes. Coir can carry residual salts, so soak, drain and rinse until the runoff is clean, then give it a Cal-Mag soak before potting.
Is husk chip better than orchid bark?
Not better, different. Husk chip holds a little more water and rewets more easily than bark, which suits growers in dry homes or anyone who forgets to water. If your orchids like to dry out hard between waterings, a bark like Orchiata is the safer pick.
What plants suit the S (12-16mm) grade?
Mature orchids, epiphytes and plants in larger pots or baskets that want plenty of air around thick roots. It also works as the chunky fraction in an aroid mix.
Can I mix it with other media?
Yes. Add it to coco or potting mix to open up the structure and drainage, or blend it with perlite for an even airier orchid or aroid mix.
