Tomatoes and cucumbers are the hungriest things in most vegie patches, and they want feeding all season, not a handful of pellets at planting. Vegetable Focus is Growth Technology's complete liquid nutrient for fruiting vegetables, made in Australia and, in Growth Technology's words, perfectly suited to tomatoes and cucumbers. It carries potassium at 3.3% w/v for fruit, nitrate-nitrogen at 2.4% for the leaf to carry it, calcium 1.1% and magnesium 0.7%, all 12 essential minerals, no urea, chlorides or sodium, and pH buffering for tap water. Use it at 3–7ml per litre in soil or 5–10ml in hydro. For lettuce and leafy greens, use Herb Focus instead. Available in 250ml, 1L, 5L and 20L.

Leafy greens use Herb Focus. Vegetable Focus is built for fruiting vegetables. For lettuce, spinach, kale and other leafy crops, Growth Technology directs growers to Herb Focus.
Built for tomatoes and cucumbersGrowth Technology's own words: perfectly suited to tomatoes and cucumbers. Also suits capsicum, eggplant, zucchini and the rest of the fruiting summer crop.
Potassium and nitrogen togetherPotassium 3.3% for fruit set and fill, with nitrate-nitrogen 2.4% so the plant keeps growing leaf while it fruits.
Calcium and magnesium on boardCalcium 1.1% and magnesium 0.7%, more of both than Fruit Focus carries. Tomatoes and cucumbers are heavy users of both, and both arrive at every watering.
No urea, chlorides or sodiumNitrate nitrogen only. Nothing building up in a grow bag or a recirculating reservoir, and no chloride load on the crop.
Soil, grow bags and hydroFormulated for soil and hydroponics, so the vegie patch, a balcony grow bag and a hydro tomato setup run off the same bottle.
pH buffered for tap waterMix at the label rate and the solution sits in range with most Australian tap water. No pH pen for a soil grow.

Grower's Tip

  • Seedlings and transplants get the bottom of the range (3ml per litre in soil). Step up as the plants set their first trusses and run the top of the range only on big plants in full crop.
  • Water consistently. Blossom-end rot in tomatoes is almost always a watering problem that stops calcium reaching the fruit, not a shortage of calcium in the feed.
  • Grow bags and pots in full sun dry fast. Water to runoff, flush with plain water once a month, and check them daily in summer.
  • Stake or trellis early. A well-fed tomato gets heavy quickly, and a snapped stem undoes a season of feeding.
  • In hydro, mix fresh every fortnight. Fruiting tomatoes and cucumbers drink more than you expect in warm weather.
  • Store the concentrate cool and dark and shake before use.

How To Use It

1Shake the bottle. For seedlings and transplants measure 3ml per litre in soil or 5ml in hydro. Step up towards 7ml (soil) or 10ml (hydro) as the plants mature and fruit.
2Add the concentrate to the water and mix. Tap water is fine and no pH adjustment is needed for soil grows.
3Water the root zone thoroughly, keeping the solution off the leaves, or refill the hydro reservoir.
4Repeat at every watering through the season.
5Once a month, water with plain water only to flush mineral salts. Mix fresh solution at least every fortnight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Vegetable Focus good for tomatoes?

Yes. Growth Technology describes it as perfectly suited to tomatoes and cucumbers, and formulates it to encourage high quality and heavy yields in vegetables.

Can I use it on lettuce and leafy greens?

No, it is not the best choice. Growth Technology directs leafy green vegetables to Herb Focus, which is balanced for leaf rather than fruit.

Does it contain urea?

No. Vegetable Focus is free from urea, chlorides and sodium. Nitrogen is supplied as nitrate.

How much do I use?

3–7ml per litre of water in soil and potting mix, 5–10ml per litre in hydroponics, at every watering. Start low on seedlings and increase as the plants mature. Flush with plain water once a month.

Do I need to adjust the pH?

No, not with most tap water. It is pH buffered. Recirculating hydro systems should still be monitored as a matter of course.

Does it prevent blossom-end rot?

It supplies the calcium (1.1% w/v) the fruit needs, but blossom-end rot is usually caused by irregular watering stopping calcium reaching the fruit. Keep watering consistent and the calcium in the feed can do its job.

Can I use it in a hydroponic tomato system?

Yes. It is formulated for both hydroponics and soil. Use 5–10ml per litre and replace the reservoir every fortnight.

What is the NPK?

Growth Technology publishes a full analysis rather than a ratio: nitrate-nitrogen 2.4%, phosphorus 0.5% and potassium 3.3% w/v, plus calcium, magnesium, sulfur and six chelated trace elements. The full table is in Specifications.

How long does a mixed solution last?

About 1–2 weeks. After that, replace it.

Welcome to The Grow Guys

We built The Grow Guys from the soil up — well, coco and perlite. Before we sold gear, we bought it, ran it, and learned the hard way what's worth the money and what ends up in the shed. That's the filter everything on our shelves passes through. No sales scripts, no rebadged junk, no telling you what you want to hear. Just gear we'd run ourselves and advice from people who actually grow. Chasing higher yields, tighter flowers, or your first harvest? You're in the right place.
