Green Planet's Expanded Clay is a 25L bag of 8–15 mm LECA — lightweight expanded clay aggregate, the kiln-fired clay balls hydro growers run as a clean, reusable growing medium. It's 100% natural, pH-neutral, and eco-friendly, and it does two jobs at once: the porous balls pull air through the root zone to prevent root rot, while their structure drains freely and still retains moisture. Run it on its own in hydro and aquaponic systems, as a drainage layer in pots, or as a topper over soil and coco.

Does expanded clay contain nutrients?
No. LECA is an inert medium — it holds water, air, and roots, but every nutrient your plants get has to come from the feed solution.
Is it reusable?
Yes. Wash the balls clean between crops and they run again — the clay doesn't break down or shrink, so one bag lasts across many cycles.
Do I need to rinse it before use?
Yes. Green Planet's instructions are to rinse thoroughly to remove dust before filling your container — skipping it puts clay fines into your reservoir, pumps, and lines.
Will it change my solution's pH?
No. It's pH neutral, so your solution stays where you set it — one less variable to manage compared to reactive media.
Can I use it with soil or coco instead of on its own?
Yes. A layer in the base of a pot improves drainage, and a layer over the top of soil or coco helps hold moisture in — it works alongside other media as well as solo in hydro.
