A solid premium aroid mix needs three things working together — drainage, retention, and nutrient density. Higgins Superior Soil delivers all three in an Australian-made blend purpose-built for monstera, aroids, and humidity-loving tropical houseplants. Sustainably sourced, carefully crafted, and bagged in convenient 8L sizes for repotting day.

Built for Aroids Compost, worm castings, organic peat, and aeration components blended to mimic the loose, breathable soils of the tropical rainforest floor.
Drainage Meets Retention Open, airy structure that drains fast but holds moisture where roots need it — the balance that prevents both root rot and stress-drying.
Nutrient-Dense Base Compost and micronutrient-rich worm castings deliver gentle, microbe-fed nutrition without the heavy slow-release fertiliser load.
Australian Made Sustainably sourced and carefully crafted by Higgins Smarter Gardening, packaged in convenient 8L bags ready for repotting day.

Repotting Tip
  • Water your plant 24 hours before repotting — it makes the root ball easier to lift and reduces transplant stress.
  • Repot in the morning, not the heat of the afternoon, so roots can settle in cooler conditions.
  • Hold off on full watering for the first week after repotting — let any disturbed roots heal before driving moisture through them.

How to Repot With Higgins Superior Soil

1
Choose a pot 2–3cm wider than the current root ball with solid drainage holes. Terracotta or breathable plastic works best for aroids — anything that lets the mix breathe.
2
Loosen the root ball gently. Tease apart compacted roots and trim any soft, dark, or smelly sections with clean scissors. Healthy roots are pale and firm.
3
Add a 2–3cm layer of Higgins Superior Soil to the base of the new pot. Sit the plant centred and at the same depth it was sitting before — burying the stem causes rot.
4
Backfill around the root ball, tapping the pot gently on the bench to settle the mix without compacting it. Leave 1–2cm clear at the rim for watering headroom.
5
Water lightly until you see drainage from the base. Hold off on full watering for the first week so any disturbed roots can heal before driving moisture through them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Higgins Superior Soil suitable for monstera and other aroids?

Yes — it's blended specifically for aroid and tropical indoor plants. The combination of organic peat, compost, worm castings, and aeration components delivers the drainage and root-zone breathability monstera, philodendron, alocasia, and anthurium need to thrive indoors.

What's inside the 8L bag?

A nutrient-dense compost base, micronutrient-rich worm castings, and an organic peat foundation with aeration components built in for optimal root growth. The blend is engineered for both drainage and moisture retention, which is the trickiest balance to hit with tropical houseplants.

Can I use this mix for outdoor plants?

Yes for sheltered outdoor tropicals — covered verandahs, patios, courtyard pots, and shadehouses are all fair game. It's not designed as a general-garden soil and isn't intended for open-ground beds where its drainage profile would be wasted.

Does the mix include slow-release fertiliser?

The compost and worm casting components provide gentle, microbe-rich nutrition naturally. For heavy-feeding aroids during active growing months, we recommend pairing with Higgins Plant Tonic or another balanced liquid feed — that gives you full control over the feeding regime rather than relying on whatever slow-release pellets a mix happens to contain.

How far does an 8L bag go?

As a rough guide, 8L will repot one large pot (around 25cm diameter), two medium pots (18–20cm), or several small pots (12–15cm). Always good to have a bit spare for top-ups through the year as the mix settles.

How should I store an opened bag?

Keep the bag sealed when not in use and store somewhere cool and dry — a garage shelf or laundry cupboard is fine. Avoid leaving it open or in direct sun, which can dry out the biological components and reduce the worm casting activity that gives the mix its edge.

Is Higgins Superior Soil Australian made?

Yes — Higgins Smarter Gardening is an Australian horticultural brand and their products are blended locally. Buying Higgins keeps your dollars in the Australian growing economy and supports an Aussie-made supply chain.
